Lacey & Larkin Speak Up About Trump’s Recent Decision

Jim Larkin, a newsman who grew up in Phoenix, Arizona, spearheaded the growth of the Phoenix New Times publication.

He worked hand in hand with Michael Lacey who spent his childhood at Newark but decided to change his residency and moved to the west wide. Both newsmen attended at the Arizona State University. Lacey was positioned as the New Times’ executive editor while Larkin took charge of the advertising responsibilities.

On the October 2007 issue of Phoenix New Times, the publication exposed clear information about a grand-jury investigation which tackled the reputation of the sheriff from Maricopa County, Joe Arpaio. The infamous sheriff was also known for his anti-immigrant propaganda. Last October 18, 2007, Arpaio’s officers arrested both Lacey and Larkin from their residential homes. The officers who belonged to the Maricopa County Selective Enforcement Unit headed on with the arrest for they have known that both newsmen were writing about the ongoing grand-jury investigation details.

Trump’s recent forgiveness of Arpaio has led to a lot of changes. Arpaio, who already had a fair share of law-enforcement misdoings, was stimulated with the Phoenix New Times’ information for his office’s previous poor behavior was regularly exposed by the publication way back in 1992.

The sheriff’s controversial issues include the mysterious number of jailed men who passed away in his prison cells and the extra-legal procedures performed by his officers which mainly aimed to tangle the reputation of his political enemies. The sheriff’s wrongful arrest of both Lacey and Larkin and his constant disregard for civil and human rights of Latinos who lived in his jurisdiction are two of his most infamous misdoings.

In 2013, Maricopa County paid $3.75 million to Larkin and Lacey to settle the sheriff’s wrongful arrest. Both newsmen launched a non-profit, the Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund with the use of the substantial payment.

The fund was established to assist and help the migrants and immigrants with regards to their rights. Another mission of the Lacey & Larkin Frontera Fund was to support the Latin American groups living in the state of Arizona.

On the year 2016, the sheriff gradually encountered his downfall. He was not granted his seventh term as a sheriff for the electorates in his jurisdiction disagreed to grant him with another 4 years in office.However, there has been a resurgence in outcry based on the recent decision of Trump to pardon him.

Even with the bad and immoral history of Arpaio, the people were greatly shocked and astounded for he was granted with a pardon by President Donald Trump who is known to be his long time friend.
