Michael Thoreau Lacey

Michael Thoreau Lacey was born on September 26, 1959. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where he wrote a thesis on Banach spaces, and solved various problems associated with empirical and logarithm functions.

With keen interests in mathematics, Michael Lackey pursued more works on subjects of probabilities, ergodic, and especially harmonic analysis – the focal point of his academic studies.

Moreover, his interests took him to pursue a postdoctoral degree at the Louisiana State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC). At UNC, Michael Lacey helped provide evidence for the central limit theorem.

After works at UNC, Michael Lacey gained a valuable position at Indiana University. While at the university, Lacey achieved several achievements, including the Salem Prize and National Science Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship – a prestigious honor awarded by the United States government.

Furthermore, he took interests in the Hilbert transform: a form of a linear operator in mathematics. In addition, the transform was the focal point of a postulation by Alberto Calderon. Read more: Michael Lacey |Math Alliance and Michael Lacey | Wikipedia

The tenure at Indiana University helped Michael Lacey gain valuable experience in the mathematics field. Since then, he has become a Mathematics Professor at Georgia Institute of Technology (GIT). In addition, he received a valuable Guggenheim Fellowship for his work with Xiaochum Li – a famous Chinese mathematician. More recently in 2012, he became a fellow (member) of the American Mathematical Society.

Michael Lacey’s achievements go beyond mathematics. His desire to help undergraduate and Ph.D. students have placed him amongst the best instructors in America.

By helping with multiple grants programs such as MCTP and VIGRE, there have been hundreds of students who have directly benefitted from Lacey’s efforts. In fact, he has guided 10 students to receive postdoctoral positions just like him. Today, he spends his leisure time traveling to diverse places such as China and gaining valuable insights as to their lifestyle.
